I studied Trumpet at the Junior Guildhall School of Music and Drama and Trinity College of Music, and have since played with some great Orchestras including the Munich Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonie de Nationen as well as many London and home counties-based Orchestras covering styles from Baroque to Contemporary music, touring much of Europe and America.
Big Band music has had a huge influence on me. I was introduced to the sounds of Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Glenn Miller from a very early age by my Grandfather George Busby, a former dance band trumpet player and carpenter. Over the years i have enjoyed playing with great bands such as Back to Basie, Glenn Miller Memorial Orchestra, Trinity Big Band with Bobby Lamb, Young Guns Big Band and the Rat Pack stage show.
Playing in Brass Bands and at the Junior Guildhall, there was opportunity to gain experience as an all-round player. Specialising on the Flugel Horn, I have featured in solo performances and recordings. I am also a founder member of Pioneer Brass and Docklands Sinfonia with my brother Spencer Down.
From Plays to Opera, Musicals and stage performances, my theatre work is varied. I have played with companies at home and abroad, including Carl Rosa, The Opera Project, Royal Shakespeare Company as well as West End, touring shows and Panto's.
Recordings with Universal Records, Island Records, Dromatico, BBC, music videos and film; with artists such as Katie Melua, Bob Blakeley, Grace Kennedy and on the film, The Riot Club. Other highlights include playing on live shows from the Royal Albert Hall with Imogen Heap, Royal Variety performances at Buckingham Palace, the gala dinner for the International TV Awards in Monte Carlo, The Queens Diamond Jubilee, Olympic Torch celebrations, with the Earthlights Band in the UK and Europe and the Atlantic Soul Orchestra.
